Consulate stories
Provides many charming and insightful stories about Sri Chinmoy's experiences and relationships with his Consulate colleagues early in his stay in America.
Within two months of his arrival in New York on 13 April 1964, Sri Chinmoy was able to obtain work as a Junior Consular Assistant in the Passport and Visa Section of the Indian Consulate General in New York City. He worked at the Consulate, which was located near Central Park in Manhattan, for about three years. This period spawned many stories as Sri Chinmoy struggled to make ends meet, to find better accommodation, to provide exemplary service at his workplace and to build a foundation for what was to become a world-wide spiritual Centre. In the decades since this Consulate period, Sri Chinmoy has often enchanted his students with extremely sweet and vivid stories about those years. He recently said, "In those days I was poverty-stricken, but my heart was full of joy. In those days I used to play in the hope-garden; my heart of hope was blossoming."
